Symmetry

What is Symmetry?

Diamond Symmetry is determined by how well the various facets are aligned. Do they meet where they are mathematically intended to? Is the top of the diamond (table) properly centered or slightly off to one side? Is the bottom "point" (culet) of the diamond exactly in the center or a little off? These are just a few of the characteristics considered when establishing symmetry.

Due to the precision needed to grade symmetry, it can be very difficult to accurately determine the grade even by diamond experts. The Gemological Institute or America (GIA) use five categories to define symmetry:

Excellent
Very Good
Good
Fair
Poor

A symmetry grade of Good or above is recommended.
