Polish

What is Polish?

Polish is the term used to define the surface condition of the diamonds facets. Polish features are located on the surface and do not penetrate into the diamond under 10X magnification.

Although a diamonds hardness can produce incredible luster, a diamond crystal does posess a natural grain. This grain, similar in some respects to wood, can produce variations during the polishing process. The goal is to produce an even highly polished facet that will not diminish the light performance of the diamond.

The Gemological Institute or America (GIA) use five categories to define polish:

Excellent
Very Good
Good
Fair
Poor

The image to the right displays polishing lines under high magnification. Here they appear as a diagonal whitish smudge.

A polish grade of Good or above is recommended.
